Botox

Botox is the number one cosmetic procedure in the Western world, with many millions of treatments every year. Botox was first used in the late 1980s by ophthalmologists for treating optic muscle dysfunctions. It was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002, offering millions of patients the opportunity to get rid of facial lines and wrinkles.

Cosmetic facial Botox uses include anti-wrinkle treatment for crow's feet, frown lines, and furrows in the forehead.

How Botox Works

The Botox product, medically known as Botulinum Toxin Type A, is an injectable compound. It works by disrupting the activity of the wrinkle-forming muscles beneath the skin 1 cm around the site of its injection. It reduces the muscle strength and diminishes the contraction, so that both the muscle and the skin relax and smoothen. Results are usually begin to be evident within one week, peak at 2 weeks and last about four months.

Botox typically reduces wrinkles by 80 percent. Patients are typically between the ages of 35 and 60. Results vary among individual cases, and the results of a single session are temporary, but in the long term the repetition of the treatment reinforces the results and can virtually stop the formation of the wrinkles.

The Botox Procedure

Botox injection is performed in the doctor's office, usually without anaesthesia. However, a numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area. Patients may experience some minimal discomfort from the needle injection. Depending on the extent of treatment, the procedure can take a few minutes up to 20 minutes. Normal activities can be resumed immediately. However, patients are advised to stay out of the sun.

Alternative and Complementary Treatments

Frequently the patient may benefit from the combination of the Botox treatment with other minimally invasive procedures like the use of dermal fillers as Restylane or Surgiderm.
